International Cricket Council is likely to apply stringent rules to stop match-fixing during the upcoming ICC cricket world cup in Australia and New Zealand.
While it is already forbidden for players to use personal mobile phones during international matches, the global governing body of cricket may ask cricketers and support staff to submit their personal cell phone numbers prior to the world cup. Its aim is to strengthen surveillance on the players.
So, quite naturally, Bangladeshi cricketers including Mashrafe and Shakin, too, are not going to be excluded from the process.
ICC officials may sit with the captain and the manger of each team soon. There, players, coaching staff and the coach of all teams may be asked to submit their phone numbers to the ICC authorities. This initiative is presumably aimed at keeping their contacts and conversations under constant watch. Thus, ICC wants to prevent any unwanted incident such as match-fixing during the world cricket extravaganza.
ICC may also issue some other directives, including ban on attending night-time party. An official of ICC anti-corruption unit may be assigned to monitor activities of each team. Board officials and players may not be allowed to stay at the same hotel.
When contacted, Bangladesh team manger Khaled Mahmud, now in Brisbane, Australia, said the Bangladesh team members are yet to hear of something like this. "We will, however, submit our numbers if we are asked to do so," he told Prothom Alo over telephone.
On this issue, Bangladesh Cricket Board chief executive officer Nizam Uddin Chowdhury said, "Clearly, this initiative has been taken to eliminate match-fixing. This kind of initiative is not unusual either.
